Apart from the fonts you have to pay for there are loads of fonts available for free. I've just downloaded Museo300 as a .zip and even though I ticked 'Cannot use OTF', it actually has an .otf extension. I tried your guide anyway and it worked. Inkscape and Scribus can see the font too.
